Thursday Thoughts

“He has set the right time for everything.”
Ecclesiastes 3:11

This passage from the book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that God has set the appointed time for all things we experience in life. After prayer and discernment, Mrs. Laurie Baker has decided to pass her preschool baton on to another teacher. It is a bittersweet moment since our school has been blessed with her loving leadership for 24 years. However, she has other people who are needing her in their lives and she feels God’s call to spend more time with family. I know that anyone who has been touched by Mrs. Baker’s influence will be saddened and yet happy that she is ready to enjoy retirement.

Open House was a very big success with many new families visiting our school. St. Benedict Catholic School registration for the 2017-2018 school year is now open for new and current families. We have received many registration forms, scholarship/financial aid applications, and $100 registration fees PLEASE register early to reserve your child’s place as classes fill up quickly. This current year we had waiting lists in 5 of our grades!

If you need applications for Little Flower or St. Benedict scholarships, please call or stop in to the school or parish business office. Ohio State Tests

Students receiving the Ohio Ed Choice or Ed Choice Expansion scholarships are required by the Ohio Department of Education to participate in the state assessments. Students in Grades 3-8 will take the Language Arts and Math tests. Additionally Grades 5 and 8 will take Science and Grades 4 and 6 will take Social Studies tests. The window for Ohio State Testing is March 13 – May 12. The schedule is designed so that testing sessions are broken up to be the least disruptive to classroom instruction as possible.

NWEA Measure of Academic Progress (MAP)
All K-8 students participated in MAP Testing in the fall to determine their ability at that time. Now we look forward to seeing the progress that has been made over the course of this year. Students in K-1 will take a Math test and a Reading test. Grades 2-8 will take a total of four tests: Math, Reading, Language Arts and Science.

MAP Testing window is April 3 – May 5. The schedule is designed that any grade will only have one test on any given day. Depending on the grade, students will spend no more than 1 hour on 3-4 days completing the MAP tests. (Students generally finish in much less than the allotted hour.)

We are thrilled to announce that recently, St. Benedict School purchased and acquired 120 new Chromebooks with ASP funds. This is a result of our School Improvement Plan goal to help students become more self-directed learners. In addition to the laptops and I-pads currently used, many more students will soon be able to use technology as a learning tool in their classrooms.

We hope to be able to utilize the chromebooks to administer the upcoming MAP Testing so that students may stay in their classrooms to take the assessments. Thanks to Mrs. Sue Phlipot, we anticipate this will happen at the start of the testing this year in April.

These are very exciting times in education and we are committed to providing every opportunity for our students to progress and be successful. We will continue to be good stewards of the funds we have available and use them in ways to prepare 21st century learners.

Snack Shack

Due to a funeral luncheon and set up for the Spring Event, there will be no Snack Shack on Friday, March 17th.

Hot Lunch

Due to the parish Fish Fry, there will be no hot lunch served on March 9th and 23rd. Students who have purchased lunches for these days will be credited for lunches in April. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Help Wanted

We are blessed to have a PTO and volunteers who give their time each week to provide hot lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We could use some more help especially on Thursdays. If you could give even one or two days a month it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Cheryl Bebee ( for more information or if you can help.

FINAL THOUGHT: An Irish Prayer

May God give you...
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

United in Community, in partnership with families, guided by the message of St. Benedict,
God calls us to LIVE, LEARN, and LOVE.
